Celebrate Your Mum!

Joyeux Fete des Meres!

Although festivals in honour of women’s fertility date all the day back to ancient Greece, did you know that France, the birthplace of Champagne, only celebrated its first Mothers Day in 1918, under the influence of the American GIs who had been stationed there during World War I?

‘Mothers Day’ became official in 1920, because at that time the government was focused on the re-population of post war France. In those days Mothers who gave birth to four or five children were awarded a bronze medal. For having six or seven children the mother would receive a silver medal, and eight or more offspring was rewarded with a gold medal.

Thankfully since the Vichy government instituted the National Day of Mothers (Fete Des Meres) in 1945, French mums now receive flowers, cards and perfumes, and usually a grand family dinner in their honour. Champagne is of course the wine of choice at these annual celebrations all over the world and these days you can even send your mum champagne through the post – so there’s no excuse not to spoil her with festive fizz!

Whether your own mum loves to be treated to a royal breakfast in bed, a big family lunch or prefers an intimate refined evening celebration – here’s Champagne Jayne’s Top 3 champagne picks for Mothers Day 2018:
